Decade of Decommissioning
As the energy transition accelerates, decommissioning has moved from the margins of industry planning to the center of strategic debate. The Decommissioning Roundtable 2025, hosted last month in collaboration with Arcadis, brought together senior figures from across the energy landscape to examine how the sector can deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable decommissioning at scale.
Participants highlighted that the coming decade will be shaped by three converging forces: regulatory tightening, supply-chain transformation, and the push for circularity. With more assets reaching end of life, the question is no longer if decommissioning will dominate the agenda — but how it can be done smarter, faster, and with lower environmental impact.
Technology, data, and cross-sector collaboration were recurring themes. From remote operations and AI-enabled planning to re-use of materials and shared infrastructure, innovation is rapidly changing what’s possible. Yet, delegates also pointed to persistent challenges — inconsistent regulation, fragmented liability frameworks, and the need for clearer funding pathways.
The resulting “Decommissioning Roundtable 2025 Highlights” document distills the key findings, lessons, and forward actions discussed during the event. It offers a concise overview of where the industry stands today — and what it must do to meet the demands of the decade ahead.
